I am always looking for new ways to incorporate my calligraphy into weddings and events and if you’re like me, you can’t get enough of a good watercolor project. Today I wanted to share with you one of my favorite projects that uses masking fluid and watercolor to create a whimsical and artistic touch to any celebration.
This particular project uses masking fluid to create a “white” writing effect against a watercolored background. It’s a fun technique for projects such as place cards, escort cards, individual print pieces or even envelopes. Honestly, the options are endless and it is a sure way to wow your clients or guests.
The coolest part? You can use the masking fluid with paint brushes AND pointed pen! I tested out the process with pointed pen recently and thought I’d share the results…including what I would do differently next time!
STEP 1: GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES
Below is our list of preferred supplies for this project:
1) Watercolor set
2) Masking fluid
3) Jar set
4) Watercolor paper
5) Calligraphy Pen
STEP 1// POUR MASKING FLUID INTO A JAR
Using a mixing jar (like the ones linked to above), pour in your masking fluid so you’ll have a convenient place to dip your pen or brush into.
STEP 2 // WRITE YOUR CALLIGRAPHY IN MASKING FLUID
When doing pointed pen make sure the masking fluid is actually coming out for your fine lines – it can be tricky to tell especially when writing on white paper. If you don’t have the fine lines in the masking fluid, they won’t show up as white in the finished piece.
STEP 3 // APPLY WATERCOLOR
STEP 4 // ERASE MASKING FLUID
STEP 5 // VOILA!
OOPS: Here is a look at why you don’t want to use Cranes Lettra paper or another paper with too much cotton – it pulls up when you are trying to erase! I had to redo these on watercolor paper.
NOTE: For future projects I would definitely apply a more saturated amount of watercolor so they show up just a tiny bit better!
